MassAlert Integration with NOAA NWS and IPAWS
ATI’s MassAlert software is designed to seamlessly integrate with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) and the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). This powerful integration enables automatic and real-time distribution of critical weather alerts and public warnings directly from trusted government sources, ensuring communities receive timely and accurate information during emergencies.
MassAlert Integration with NOAA’s NWS
Harness the power of ATI Systems’ MassAlert software, integrated with NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS), to utilize advanced polygon-based alerting. This system not only defines affected areas with pinpoint accuracy using the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) but also automates the activation process. MassAlert software, supporting CAP 1.2 as both a receiver and initiator, enables tailored and precise emergency responses directly through the client’s registered NWS account.
By continuously requesting and processing weather alerts specific to the client’s settings, MassAlert ensures that sirens within the designated regions are activated promptly, without the need for manual intervention. This streamlined and automated approach significantly enhances the speed and reliability of emergency responses, maximizing operational efficiency and ensuring targeted alert dissemination based on real-time weather data.
Polygon Analysis:
Each alert containing polygon information is analyzed to ascertain which sirens fall within or overlap the affected area.
Polygon Activation:
Sirens located within these polygons are specifically activated, optimizing the response to truly affected zones.
Total System Activation:
In the absence of a polygon, MassAlert triggers a total system activation, ensuring that no potential threat goes unannounced.
Adjustable Proximity:
The sensitivity of siren activation relative to the polygon can be adjusted by changing the siren’s coverage radius, allowing for customizable alert responses based on local needs.
Real-Time Display:
Activations triggered by NWS alerts are prominently displayed in the standard activation window of the MassAlert interface. This includes detailed event information like the type of warning (e.g., tornado), urgency, and status, enhancing situational awareness for emergency managers.
Map Visualization:
Any received polygons are visually represented on the main screen map, illustrating the affected area and pinpointing the sirens that are being activated. This provides a clear and immediate understanding of the scope and scale of the emergency.
Comprehensive Logging:
All NWS alerts received for the region, irrespective of whether they trigger siren activation, are logged and saved within the system. This ensures a complete historical record for review, compliance, and analytical purposes.
MassAlert Integration with IPAWS
Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) is a vital nationwide alert system that enables government agencies at every level to efficiently communicate crucial, life-saving information to the public. This system empowers agencies to ensure that residents receive timely and essential alerts during emergencies, utilizing various communication methods to ensure information reaches the public efficiently.
ATI Systems’ MassAlert® software is fully compliant with IPAWS-OPEN, ensuring robust integration with IPAWS. This integration facilitates automatic activation of ATI’s Giant voice sirens and indoor speakers in response to IPAWS alerts, including those distributed via the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). EAS alerts broadcast over television and radio to reach a wide audience, while WEA alerts are sent directly to mobile devices, including most smartphones sold since 2012, ensuring timely and effective delivery of critical warnings to individuals in affected areas.
The integration of MassAlert® with IPAWS follows a meticulous four-step process to ensure effective and reliable public warning:
How it works:
MassAlert®’s advanced rules engine allows operators to specifically tailor which IPAWS alerts to respond to, including EAS and WEA notifications, and determine the precise actions to take. This flexibility is enhanced by MassAlert®’s text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities, enabling IPAWS alerts to be directly converted into audible messages and broadcasted across ATI’s diverse alerting platforms.
The integration of MassAlert® with IPAWS follows a meticulous four-step process to ensure effective and reliable public warning:
Step1: Alert Origination
Alerting authorities at local, state, territorial, tribal, or federal levels create a CAP message and send it to the IPAWS Open Platform for Emergency Networks (OPEN), encompassing alerts from sources like NOAA’s National Weather Service.
Step2: Alert Aggregation
The centralized IPAWS aggregator authenticates the sender and processes CAP alert messages. These alerts are then distributed via ATOMS feeds accessible over the internet, ensuring they reach EAS and WEA systems.
Step3: Alert Dissemination
MassAlert® monitors the IPAWS ATOM feed, using its sophisticated rules engine to effectively disseminate alerts to the proper channels in the appropriate formats. It visualizes affected areas with polygons on maps, pinpointing ATI’s siren locations and sound coverage for alerts such as tornado threats.
Step4: Alert Delivery
Comprehensive alert delivery through MassAlert® extends across multiple channels, including ATI’s outdoor sirens and indoor speakers, networked computers, digital signage, existing paging systems, and specifically EAS and WEA, ensuring widespread and effective public notification.
