CUSCO BECOMES THE FIRST HERITAGE CITY IN PERU TO HAVE A STATE-OF-THE-ART EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

With an investment of S/ 712 thousand soles, the Provincial Municipality of Cusco implemented European and U.S. technology to protect the people of Cusco against possible landslides.

In a historic milestone for security and heritage preservation, the Provincial Municipality of Cusco delivered the modern Early Warning System (SAT) in the Saphy ravine. This initiative, executed through the Management of the Historic Center, will mitigate the risks of landslides, floods and landslides that threaten both the population and the invaluable architectural wealth of the area.

The implementation, which required an investment of 712,000 soles, will directly benefit more than 3,300 Cusco residents and includes three cutting-edge technological components: a hydrometeorological system with high-precision sensors, a crisis monitoring system with specialized software and a mass notification system with high-power loudspeakers located in strategic locations. capable of operating even in the event of power outages thanks to the use of solar panels.

This effort has been recognized internationally, highlighting the pronouncement of UNESCO, which described the initiative as a model for other cities in the world, by integrating state-of-the-art technology for risk management in a heritage city, thus strengthening its resilience in the face of the challenges of climate change.

Likewise, the provincial commune developed an awareness work “house by house”, instructing neighbors on the operation of the system and evacuation routes such as: Don Bosco Avenue, Conquista Street, Tambo de Montero, Cuesta del Almirante and Plazoleta Santa Teresa, consolidating a culture of prevention and timely response to emergencies. In this way, the Provincial Municipality of Cusco reaffirms its firm commitment to the protection of life, the defense of heritage and the construction of a safer, more resilient and future-proof city.
